Why I Shifted My Approach to Designing Home: Energetics of Home
Observations
Four years ago, I found myself craving a change in my business. I knew after being self-employed for a year at that point that the way I was going about my work was not as fulfilling as it once was. As much as I tried to push it aside and continue, the louder the truth became that my approach to design was not resonating with me anymore.
I wondered how I could go deeper— to really engage and guide my clients in understanding what Home truly means to and for them.
I’ve always been curious about why people do things, the way they behave, and the decisions they make. I wondered why people treated me the way they did and I promise this won’t be a sad story but I feel this is an important mention of my approach to designing Home for myself and guiding others to design their own Homes.
Our homes are more than just physical structures; they are reflections of our inner worlds, shaped by our childhood experiences and the environments that supported or ignored our core needs.
The more accessible and commonplace interior design services become, the more people will begin to invest in the inside of their homes. Investing in our homes is one of the best things we can do for ourselves and I believe understanding the intention behind what you’d like to change, what drives that desire, and what you’d like to receive is crucial.
Back in 2021, I received back-to-back clients who were indecisive, and even after they seemed to gain clarity during the design process, they wouldn’t commit to bringing the vision to life.
Sure, there could be a multitude of reasons that may not be “that deep”, but what about those where it was? From my own experience of creating Home & cultivating a sense of belonging grew a mission to help others who may be seeking to create that, too. Even if that wasn’t something that was stopping my past clients, it could be stopping others who didn’t feel interior design services were for them.
The Influence of Childhood Environments
Our childhood environments play a significant role in shaping our perspectives on home and the world. These early experiences influence the way we perceive security, stability, and support. If we grew up in nurturing and harmonious spaces that met our basic needs and beyond, we can assume we’ll carry a positive and reassuring view of home throughout our lives.
On the other hand, if our early environments lacked stability, security, and support, we may struggle to find those feelings of comfort and sanctuary in our adult homes. The lack of stability, security, and support isn’t just from financial issues, but also emotional aspects, too. If we didn’t have our emotional needs met and validated as children, it’s easy to have attachment issues around the home as adults.
What can help us in this process is to connect with our inner child. To connect with our younger selves is to revisit our childlike wonder, that innate curiosity, and the ability to see the world through eyes filled with wonder and openness. It's a journey to discover the stability, security, and support we subconsciously desire. The concept of child-like wonder is so powerful that it can transform not only the way we view the world, but how we design, relate to, and experience our homes.
The Power of Curiosity
Child-like wonder encourages curiosity. The eagerness to explore, learn, and discover. This quality can be a guiding force in how we curate our living spaces. By allowing ourselves to approach our homes with a curious mindset, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and experiences. By embracing child-like wonder it invites us to open our minds and hearts. It is a reminder that our homes should be places where we embrace not only the physical aspects but the emotional and energetic dimensions. Our spaces should encourage growth, creativity, and self-discovery. When we open our minds and hearts to the potential of our spaces, we create environments that nurture our well-being.
Incorporating child-like wonder into our lives and homes means being a witness to our visions. Allowing ourselves to dream, set intentions, and manifest our desires. By acknowledging our visions, we bring them into our physical spaces and make them a part of our everyday lives. Child-like wonder encourages us to be more in tune with our bodies. Our physical well-being is intrinsically connected to the spaces we inhabit. By listening to our bodies and understanding their needs, we can create environments that support our overall health and vitality.
Devotion to Curating Sacred Spaces
I learned to curate a sacred space, we must be devoted to the journey of curation which takes time. It's not solely about our monetary budget but our mental, emotional, and energetic capacities— our internal budget.
Creating a sacred space requires an investment in our well-being and a commitment to fostering an environment that supports and nurtures us.
The question is not about how much money you can spend on your home but whether you are willing to dedicate your mental, emotional, and energetic resources to the journey of crafting a sacred space. It's about the willingness to connect with your inner child, embrace curiosity, and open your mind and heart to the possibilities of your home.
Your sacred space is an extension of yourself, a reflection of your journey, and a sanctuary where you find comfort, joy, and inspiration. It's a place where you can rekindle your childlike wonder, explore your visions, and embrace your body's needs.
The truth about the Home Dynamic
Lately, I’ve been fascinated and led to explore all the ways people relate and refer to the topic and experience of “Home”. Picking up different genres of books with “Home” in the title, skimming through psychology websites around our dis-orienting relationship with our homes and the family dynamics that lived and breathed within the physical structures we called “Home” for years and decades.
The home and family dynamic has been under attack for centuries. Many of those values and beliefs from long ago still vibrate within the walls of our modern homes. The foundations on which those walls are sitting have been crumbling from the frustrations and the continuous confusion of what home and family are. The strain has become too much for many. The dysfunction caused rifts in connections to self and the family community. What happens to the branches of the family tree that have been severed and you watch as the metaphorical family home burns to the ground?
You know that saying,
“Don’t set yourself on fire to keep others warm?”
That’s a part of the story here, too.
When a person comes into the lineage and notices what’s wrong and points it out, sometimes alongside being outcasted, they are also heavily leaned on to keep others warm. Members of the family, soak up all their light to keep their insatiable desires alive. Those desires are insatiable because there’s no aim and there’s no conscious reason. The answers lie within at the roots, but no one has dared to venture there until now. This beacon of light shines that light on the darkest crevasses, illuminating the wounds and pains, and those who witness them either join in the long-term repair or rebel against it, thrashing in denial.
To be the light-bringer is not an easy task, and because I know that so intimately, I am committed to guiding those who have brought the light to continue to shine, knowing that their work here in this life is not in vain. I’m committed to providing new perspectives to help them anchor into their purpose and to speak their truth knowing that at least one person hears them and soon others will, too. I cannot do the work for them just like others couldn’t do the work for me, but I can be a witness to your light and hold space as you get clear.
