Holistic Interior Design

The shift two years ago really allowed for necessary reflection and the clarity one can’t get when moving way too fast.

I had this feeling the last three years that my vision of and for my business was changing, but I wasn’t completely sure how. I decided to sit with it.

I talked with my close friends and my husband about it as a soundboard session so I could start to make sense of what was wanting to be birthed. I decided one way to help me would be to first revisit the definitions for each word so I could see how I was starting to interpret them in my work.

What does holistic interior design mean?

When you break them down, these are the meanings of the words (as seen on my Home page):

Holistic (adj.) : a form of healing that considers the whole person -- body, mind, spirit, and emotions -- in the quest for optimal health and wellness. (webmd.com)

Interior (adj.) : being within; inside of anything; further toward the center (dictionary.com)

Design (verb) : the process of envisioning and planning the creation of something. (strate.education)

So when I started to look at these together, I started to form a new viewpoint of how to approach interior design. Let’s look at the definition for interior design:

Interior design: (noun): the professional and comprehensive practice of creating an interior environment that addresses, protects, and responds to human need(s). It is the art, science, and business planning of a creative, technical, sustainable, and functional interior solution that corresponds to the architecture of a space, while incorporating process and strategy, a mandate for well-being, safety, and health, with informed decisions about style and aesthetics (iida.org)

When we put all of this information together, it starts to make sense. There’s an emphasis on human needs, well-being, safety, and health. To me, I would like to take it a step further and incorporate elements of a holistic approach in conjunction with what interior design is truly about. To me, exploring the psyche, our spiritual well being and how our body responds, especially with healing triggers/trauma responses, are crucial as we navigate forward in our lives. It’s amazing to see people be more open to different forms of healing work and taking steps to be mindful and conscious about their decisions in life. It’s immensely important to stay curious in life, stay curious about who you are aside from the labels placed upon you.

Our homes act as the foundation for our innermost healing if we allow them to.

For some, home did not always feel like a safe space, it didn’t support them as they faced challenges in life and those experiences live deep in the body and are brought outward through actions/decisions.

Our homes are the foundation for the next generation whether or not you decide to have a family of your own. Your home can be a safe space to youngsters in your family or if you work with kids/teens in your work or just doing the inner child work within yourself. Home gets to be your sanctuary.

You get to create that for yourself.

With Holistic Interior Design, we are envisioning and planning from our center in order to promote optimal health and wellness that is functional and sustainable.

How I intend to use this in my work:

In my practice, I will focus on my clients gaining clarity in order to engage their project from a state of mindfulness and embodiment. That’s where tools such as their birth chart in Astrology and Human Design chart for guiding as they make decisions. Both tools are personal to their individuality since they require your birth information.

I read a book called, “The Awakened Family” by author and mother Dr. Shefali Tsabary and she mentioned a really powerful perspective about holding the desire in their vision. Her daughter expressed wanting to take horse riding lessons. The investment in this was quite a bit of money per session and would require commitment. When observing and hearing her daughter state that she didn’t think she could commit to having a horse and then saying how much she wanted a horse, she realizes that her daughter hadn’t “settled in her desire for the horse”.

She goes on to tell her daughter, “it’s natural to go back and forth. You are experiencing an authentic struggle concerning a big commitment. Let’s wait until your are consistent with your desire. Once you are at that place, we can talk about the logistics. I can give you the green light, but only when I see that you are clear about your part of the commitment.”

I’ve noticed this same pattern happening with my past clients, from what other designers have shared and I’ve personally done this, too. We all need support as we anchor into our desires and we need to reach a space of clarity and certainty in order to move forward with big changes, big commitments. Using resources and tools within our reach to help us. Many times, we aren’t even clear on the resources available to us or we aren’t clear on how to best utilize them.

The resources I will use along side Astrology and Human Design are:

  1. journal prompts

  2. visualization

  3. sound healing (singing bowl/binaural beats)

I’d like to invite you…

I’ll be hosting a free workshop called, “Revamping The Energy of Home: Creating True Sanctuary For Your Space”.

In this workshop, I’ll be providing these insights into holistic interior design to help us have a well-rounded and grounded clarity around the needs and wants for our homes as well as our core values. Through this clarity, we can begin to bridge any gaps that may be in the way of making our visions reality. The energetics of home all start with our intentions and beliefs.

The workshop will be hosted LIVE on Zoom and a replay link will be provided for those who register.

I’m so excited to facilitate this workshop. I hope to see you there!
